Phlebectomy

Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure for removing varicose veins, so you can be more active, live more comfortably and feel confident.

What is Phlebectomy?

Being confident about the appearance of your legs, no matter what you’re wearing, can go a long way to boosting your overall body confidence. Suppose you are not keen on wearing skirts because of varicose veins (or any other type). In that case, we have the solution for you.

Veins carry blood and other fluids back to the heart. When these veins become too enlarged and twisted, they can cause severe medical conditions. One of these is called varicose veins. Varicose veins are often swollen and twist together in an area called varicosity. Several treatments for varicose veins include compression stockings, laser surgery, or phlebectomy.

Phlebectomy (also known as ambulatory phlebectomy) is a minimally invasive procedure for treating varicose veins. It’s done by making a series of small incisions in the skin over the varicose vein being treated. The surgeon then grasps the enlarged vein and removes it. This relieves pressure and improves blood flow to the rest of your body. Phlebectomy is a procedure that requires only 30 to 60 minutes to complete. Even though this procedure requires a local anesthetic, it’s generally safe for most patients, and there’s less recovery time than more invasive treatments.

How does it work?

Here are the steps people typically undergo when they have a phlebectomy, also called ambulatory phlebectomy, microphlebectomy, and stab avulsion.

Dr. Lie may need you to stand so he can mark the vein with a surgical marker. You may then lie on your back, and we will clean/sterilize the areas on your leg where we plan to make the incisions (cuts). A local anesthetic will be injected to numb the area around the vein to reduce any post-surgical discomfort. Dr. Lie will use a small instrument that looks like a hook to find the varicose vein and remove as much of it as possible. After part of the vein is removed, the ends are tied off to prevent any more blood from flowing through. Dr. Lie will make as many small incisions as needed (sometimes 20 or more) to remove all the varicose veins.

When the procedure is finished, we will place compression bandages or compression tights on the legs to help get the blood through the veins. You should walk a few minutes after the treatment to help the muscles move away any excess fluid. Stockings also prevent blood clots and help with the healing process. A phlebectomy is usually a quick procedure that takes about 30 to 60 minutes. The procedure is done in a short time, with minimal discomfort and downtime. So you can get up and walk after the procedure is over. Most people will be able to resume their normal daily activities 24 hours after their phlebectomy. We recommend wearing the compression bandage or compression stocking for at least a week to help the healing process.

What are the benefits of Phlebectomy?

Phlebectomy is a surgical procedure to remove varicose veins from the deep and superficial veins of the lower extremities. This surgery is an important treatment for venous insufficiency, which can cause pain, swelling, aching and leg ulcers. Here are some of the benefits of phlebectomy:

  • It may be the ideal treatment for large varicose veins that are very close to the surface of your skin.
  • It may provide pain relief as well as reducing excess fluid and swelling in the legs. Phlebectomy patients report significant pain relief in about 95% of cases.
  • It is safe and minimally-invasive.
  • It requires no general anesthesia. A local anesthesia is enough, which eliminates any risks connected to general anesthesia.
  • It has long-lasting effects.
  • The damaged part of the vein is removed completely, so there is little to no chance it will return. You can rest assured that your varicose vein is gone.

It usually only takes 30 minutes to an hour for the procedure to be done.

These results should last a lifetime. The longevity of this treatment can be attributed to the fact that varicose veins are fully removed and won’t come back.

The side effects of phlebectomy are minimal and the most common side effect is swelling and redness around the surgery site. This will usually subside within 48 hours.

Despite its intimidating name, phlebectomy is a safe and effective procedure that improves the appearance and feel of the legs.

Scarring is usually very minimal since the incisions are so small.

The majority of people who have varicose veins are good candidates for a phlebectomy procedure, including those who do not want to use traditional vein stripping or other vein reduction treatments, including sclerotherapy. Candidates include adults of any age who have varicose veins. We will determine if you are healthy enough for this procedure during your consultation appointment.
